KENAS at the WASPA Pre-Conference Breakfast Meeting: Championing Quality Water and Sanitation Services through Accreditation

Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS) participated in the Pre-Conference Breakfast Meeting of the Kenya Water and Sanitation International Conference & Exhibition 2025, held in preparation for the main event scheduled for 23rd to 27th June 2025 at PrideInn Paradise Beach Resort, Mombasa. The pre-conference meeting brought together sector leaders and stakeholders for a dialogue on innovation, investment, and the future of water and sanitation services in Kenya.
The event was hosted by the Water Services Providers Association (WASPA) in partnership with the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation (MOWSI), the County Government of Mombasa, and the Council of Governors. The Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Hon. Zachariah Eric Mugaa, officially graced the event, calling for sustainable and collaborative approaches in tackling the sector’s challenges, especially under the growing pressures of climate change and rapid urbanization.

In his keynote address, KENAS Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Walter Ongeti, highlighted the indispensable role of accreditation in achieving safe, sustainable water and sanitation systems. He pointed to ISO/IEC 17025-accredited testing and calibration laboratories as crucial enablers of accurate water quality testing, reliable metering, and conformity with environmental and public health standards.
“Access to clean water is not just a basic human right; it is a matter of national development and environmental stewardship. Quality assurance, enabled through accreditation, helps us get the science right and the solutions sustainable,” Dr. Ongeti remarked.
The CEO further emphasized that accreditation strengthens the accountability and efficiency of service providers while increasing investor confidence in water and sanitation infrastructure. As such, accredited services play a key role in advancing Kenya’s climate-smart and investment-ready water solutions.

KENAS is a proud sponsor of the Kenya Water and Sanitation International Conference 2025 and is committed to enhancing the quality infrastructure that supports effective water management and universal access to sanitation. With climate change demanding resilience and innovation in service delivery, KENAS continues to work alongside regulators, utilities, and counties to embed accreditation into Kenya’s water governance frameworks.
