KENAS Supports Kenya Dairy Board in Advancing Product Certification for Quality Dairy Standards

Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS) continues to strengthen Kenya’s quality infrastructure by supporting regulators and key sector players in aligning with international best practices. One such partnership is with the Kenya Dairy Board (KDB), as the board embarks on the development of a robust product certification scheme for the dairy industry.

From 10th to 13th June 2025, KENAS facilitated a four-day ISO/IEC 17065 implementation training in Machakos, Kenya tailored for technical officers from KDB. The training aimed to equip participants with practical understanding of ISO/IEC 17065 and ISO/IEC 17067—international standards that guide the certification of products, processes, and services, and the design of product certification schemes, respectively.

The sessions were led by Mr. Abraham Wekesa, Manager, Inspection and Verification Scheme, and Ms. Everlyn Kabongó, Principal Accreditation Officer, Scheme Development. Their combined expertise provided both the theoretical grounding and practical insights needed for KDB to structure a credible, traceable, and internationally aligned dairy product certification scheme.

Raising the Bar for Dairy Quality

As Kenya’s dairy sector continues to grow in both scale and complexity, quality assurance is becoming more vital than ever. By pursuing a product certification framework based on ISO/IEC 17065, KDB aims to provide consistent oversight, consumer protection, and enhanced market access for dairy producers.

Mr. Wekesa noted the importance of this milestone:

“Assuring product quality through internationally recognized certification not only builds consumer confidence but also creates trade opportunities and strengthens national food safety systems.”

Ms. Kabongó added that the implementation of ISO/IEC 17065 will place KDB in a strong position to foster transparency, improve regulatory trust, and benchmark against global peers.

KENAS: Driving Quality Across Sectors

KENAS remains committed to working with regulatory institutions such as KDB to embed accredited systems that drive quality, sustainability, and innovation. By building technical capacity and offering support in scheme development, KENAS ensures that Kenya’s products and services meet the demands of today’s competitive and quality-conscious global marketplace.

As KDB takes this bold step, KENAS reaffirms its support to see the dairy certification scheme successfully developed and implemented—paving the way for a stronger, safer, and more competitive dairy sector in Kenya.
