Kenya Accelerates Aviation Sustainability: KENAS at Regional CORSIA Workshop in Abidjan

As climate change reshapes global aviation priorities, Kenya is taking bold strides to position itself as a leader in sustainable air transport. Mr. Michael Talam, Manager, Certification at the Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS), represented Kenya during the Regional Workshop on Aviation Sustainability and CORSIA Implementation held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The workshop, hosted by the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and supported by the European Union, convened aviation sustainability stakeholders from across Africa to chart the future of climate-resilient aviation.

Africa Aligns with CORSIA
One of the workshop’s key takeaways was the continent-wide commitment to the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), with 57 African states voluntarily participating in the ICAO-led framework. Côte d’Ivoire stood out as a continental pioneer, having already legislated mandatory accreditation for verification of aviation-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Kenya’s Clear Mandate: Readiness and Leadership
For Kenya, the message emerging from the workshop was urgent but inspiring: readiness is no longer optional. As global aviation sustainability efforts intensify, KENAS is stepping up by:
- Building internal capacity for GHG verification in line with ISO/IEC 14065.
- Expanding its accreditation scope to cover carbon offsetting and climate-focused verification services.
- Deepening collaborations with key stakeholders including ICAO, AFCAC, and international partners.
- Benchmarking with top-tier accreditation bodies to align with evolving global best practices.
- Engaging in high-level climate policy dialogues, reinforcing Kenya’s commitment to credible climate action.

Setting the Standard for Africa’s Aviation Future
KENAS’s participation in this forum marks more than just presence—it signals intent. By integrating technical excellence, policy engagement, and strategic partnerships, KENAS is paving the way for a future where Kenyan and African skies remain open, connected—and green.
As the global call for sustainability grows louder, KENAS is not just answering—it’s leading.
