Tenwek Hospital Laboratory Becomes First in Kenya to Transition to New ISO 15189:2022 Accreditation

Tenwek Hospital Laboratory was re-accredited to the latest version of the ISO 15189:2022 standard making it the first medical laboratory in Kenya and third in the region to transition from 2012 to the 2022 version. This prestigious accreditation is a testament to Tenwek Hospital's unwavering commitment to quality and excellence in healthcare.

The hospital's laboratory, which plays a crucial role in the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services, has now achieved a remarkable feat. This accreditation also positions the laboratory as a leader in the industry, setting a benchmark for other medical facilities in Kenya and the region. It is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire laboratory team consisting of 55 staff members.

It is a medical institution, offering a wide range of services including pharmacy, radiology, ultrasonography, laboratory services, hematology, and a blood bank. The quality of services offered makes it a premier institution serving over a million people in the vast Southwest region of the country and beyond, with patients coming from East, Central, and West Africa.

The ISO 15189 standard, widely recognized as the global benchmark for quality and competence in medical laboratories, specifies the requirements for quality and competence in medical laboratories. The main changes in the new version incorporates an alignment with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 resulting in the management requirements now appearing at the end of the document. It also incorporates requirements for point-of-care testing (POCT), previously in ISO 22870. Most importantly it has an increased emphasis on risk management.
